Vintage Varietease (Open Level) at Maison Burlesque

Dive into burlesque history in this burlesque course focusing on the origins of the art of tease! We will explore the transition of burlesque from parody on the vaudeville circuit to striptease in the cabaret clubs in this multi-discipline dance based course.

Each term we will be inspired the 'greats' who changed the art of burlesque from the 1880s - 1980s, including composers, burlesque stars and comedians! We will watch video footage and discuss as a group what makes them so iconic, then dive into choreography inspired by their movements and theatrical techniques.

In this course you will learn: -

  • What made the Burlesque Greats so Great. We will dive the nuances of a specific icons from the history of Burlesque and disect their unique style from video footage and photographs.

  • A variety of striptease skills which may inclue boas, gloves, and other costume props

  • Characterisation, comedic skills and theatrical techniques to broaden your performance skillset

  • Floor work, footwork, hand choreoraphy, bumps, grinds and other movements to explore story telling with your body

Vintage Varietease is open to all genders.

2023 Term 2 Theme: Beginning March 28th

Tuesday 8:15pm - Ann Corio’s “This Was Burlesque”

You will learn a routine and have the option to perform at our end of term Cherry Poppers Showcase on May 21st, 2023. Please note this class involves striptease and will include a pastie reveal.

Please note this is a Showcase class. All enrolments are for a 8 week course in our studio in Richmond. Casual drop-ins are not available for this class.
Class numbers will be capped at a maximum of 14 students to comply with covid-safety guidelines. Strict hygeine and physical distancing restrictions will apply. A full studio clean will be completed between each class.
