"Classic with Character" Workshop at Sky Sirens

“Classic burlesque” has had a bad rep of being labelled boring, but it’s far from it! Maple Rose, voted #21 in the 21st Century Burlesque Magazine’s Top 50 in 2021 & most Classic at the Busties in 2018, will guide you into exploring characterisation within the traditional burlesque style to create your own unique striptease character.

We will play around with clowning, narrative, dramaturgy, musicality and costuming within the realm of traditional burlesque dance styles as well as dive into the history books to find examples of iconic burlesque stars and explore how their onstage personas skyrocketed their careers.

Pre-Requisites:

From beginners to advanced students, this class is open to anyone keen to learn more skills in the theatrics of burlesque.

What to bring:

Bring your dance heels, wear comfy clothes you can move in, and feel free to carry a notebook and pen. This class will comprise of theory and movement.

Accessibility:

This masterclass is accessible to all levels of experience and to anyone keen to explore the stage craft of burlesque. The class will feature a theoretical component, and a movement component - so students will have a variation of being seated and standing throughout the 1.5 hour lesson. There will be a chair in the classroom if students require a break at any time. The classroom is located on the first floor of the building, which requires the use of approximately 15 steps. The classroom has air-conditioning.

For Hard of Hearing or Deaf students, there is quite a bit of discussion involved which will be done in a group circle setting for accessibility and can continue to run the choreographic component in this format as well. Please let us know if you require an Auslan Interpreter.

Miss Maple Rose, known as the “Queen of Classic,” has been described as the unwanted lovechild of Tempest Storm and Lucille Ball. Combining her professional expertise in costume and set design with her foundation in classical dance, Maple guides many a budding performance artist in the art of tease! She’s here to prove that “classic burlesque” doesn’t have to be boring. Either with feather fans or tapping toes, Maple will take you on a deep dive into burlesque history.

Headliner of The Australian Burlesque Festival in 2020 & 2022, winner of the the 1st Runner Up crown at Miss Burlesque Australia 2018, voted number 21 in the 21st Century Burlesque Magazine’s Top 50 Most Influential Artists of 2021, and voted Best Solo Artist and Most Classic at the Australian Burlesque Industry Awards, The Busties, in 2018 – Maple has shown that she’s “Australia’s Classiest Piece of Bacon” with a tornado of feather fans and couture costumes!
