Dive into burlesque history with Maple Rose in this Intermediate burlesque course focusing on the origins of the art of tease! We will explore the transition of burlesque from parody on the vaudeville circuit to striptease in the cabaret clubs in this multi-discipline dance based course.
Each week we will be inspired by one the 'greats' who changed the art of burlesque from the 1880s - 1980s, including composers, burlesque stars and comedians! We will watch video footage and discuss as a group what makes them so iconic, then dive into choreography inspired by their movements and theatrical techniques.
In this Tech course you will learn:
What made the Burlesque Greats so Great. Each class we will discuss the nuances of a specific performer from the history of Burlesque and disect their unique style from video footage and photographs.
A variety of striptease skills which may inclue boas, gloves, and other costume props relevant to the Icon of the week
Characterisation, comedic skills and theatrical techniques to broaden your performance skillset
Floor work, footwork, hand choreoraphy, bumps, grinds and other movements to explore story telling with your body
This class requires a degree of physical fitness. Vintage Varietease is open to all genders, and it is recommended that students have some dance or burlesque experience.
Please note this is a 1.5 hour long Tech class. Students have the option to book for an entire 6 week course. Casual drop-ins also available if not sold out in advance.
This is an live interactive ONLINE class run via Zoom. Class numbers will be capped at 14 students to ensure a personalised learning experience. Classes will also be recorded and available for enroled students to watch for one week following the class.
